Two Turfies Team-Up To Take Third

By Jerry Rousseau

KPU turf students, Aiden Murphy & Brett MacNeil, competed at the Skills Canada 2025 BC Provincials held at the Abbotsford Tradex on April 16, ultimately taking home a bronze medal out of six competing teams in the hard landscape construction competition.

2nd year student Brett MacNeil stated, “Leading up to the competition we knew it wasn’t going to be easy, especially going against people who do this kind of work on a daily basis.  It was a lot more challenging than either of us expected and the first 4 hours went by in a flash. The time limit put a lot of pressure on us but I think our experience being chased around by golfers on a daily basis had us mentally prepared for working under pressure, whether we knew it at the time or not.  We worked really well together while having to make quick decisions and compromises on how we were going to get everything completed before we ran out of time.  At the end, we were completely exhausted but everything came together nicely.  Overall it was a great experience, we had a ton of fun competing and I’m happy to have been a part of it. Also thanks to Jamie and Russ for talking us into it!”

Nothing but heavy duty, Aiden Murphy (left) and Brett MacNeil took on a sea of landscapers and made the podium with a bronze place at 2025 Skill Canada BC Provincials.

Aiden Murphy commented, “We knew we would be fighting out of our weight class with this but what an excellent experience.  A big thank you to Russ and Jamie for allowing us to take part in the day.  As Brett said, we definitely felt the pressure throughout but it all came together in the end. Although I will add, some sod in there sure would have looked good too!”

Their competition was literally head and shoulders above the rest but third place is an outstanding result for these tired turfies!

On behalf of all WCTA members, congratulations Brett and Aiden on your success.  It’s good to know the future of turf management is in good hands.  Now get back to growing grass😀!
